Chapter Eighty-Six - Three Women Meet I
My Rebirth Legend, No Pop-Up
Beep... beep...
The faint, powerless sound of the electrocardiogram drifted gently through the white hospital room.
Looking at the haggard middle-aged man before him, hooked up to an IV and seeming to have aged many years, Xia Fugui could not help letting out a soft sigh.
It had already been three days, and in De Guangqing’s eyes still lingered that unmistakable fear and terror. Though Xia Fugui had never personally seen the fight, he already knew from De Guangqing’s expression that he had apparently provoked someone he never should have. That day, he had originally worried that De Guangqing had offended Chu Zhengsheng’s daughter, but when he arrived, he found the situation had turned out completely contrary to his imagination. De Guangqing and more than a dozen of his men had all been knocked flat on the ground. The shock of it still made him shudder to this day...
Smack!
The more he thought about it, the angrier he became, and he suddenly slapped his son, Xia Jianren, who stood beside him with his head bowed and not a word to say. Five red finger marks immediately appeared on the pale skin of his face.
"You unfilial beast! You truly are a damned unfilial beast... Look at you, look at what your Uncle De has been reduced to for your sake! And you still dare bring up that girl Su Xin to me! I brought you here today so you could see clearly that if you still want to keep fighting that Xiao Qiang, then your ending will be even worse than Uncle De’s!"
Xia Fugui was nearly driven mad with rage. He had not slept well for several days, and then his son had called to bring up this matter again. If the boy had not mentioned it, it would have been one thing, but bringing it up only made his fury blaze higher! This whole absurd idea had been his precious son’s in the first place, and now look at the result: no one had been beaten, and Old De had ended up in this state. Worse still, that Xiao Qiang’s background remained a mystery. It was enough to make his lungs feel ready to burst!
Today he had specially made his son take leave and accompany him to the hospital, hoping that De Guangqing would persuade this useless son of his and make him finally give up.
Looking at Xia Jianren, who stood there in silence with his head down, De Guangqing’s deep eyes slowly came back to focus. A faint spasm crossed his pale face before he gave a bitter smile.
"Old Xia, stop hitting Xiao Ren. Liking a woman isn’t his fault." As he spoke, he patted Xia Jianren’s arm. "Godson, your godfather is useless. I don’t have the ability to teach your rival a lesson. Ah, it can only be blamed on your godfather’s poor skill and meeting such a master... It’s been a long time since I ran into anyone this strong. Someone who can put your godfather down in two moves—looking across all of C City, I’m afraid not a single person could do it. Tell your godfather, what kind of background does your rival actually have?"
"Godfather? You... you really got beaten down by that kid Xiao Qiang?" Only after hearing De Guangqing’s words did Xia Jianren seem to truly believe all of this was real. He shook his head in disbelief. "Impossible. Xiao Qiang’s parents are just ordinary people; he doesn’t have any background at all. I investigated everything clearly—how could this..."
"Hmph! Clearly? If it were really so clear, why would your godfather be lying in a hospital? If it were really clear, why would your godfather’s dozen-odd men still be unable to get out of bed? If it were really clear, then tell me—why would your Brother Zhou Zisheng say his family was worth a fortune? How could your godfather have been put down in two moves? How could he possibly have so many powerful men under him? You unfilial son, how many times have I told you that before you make an enemy of someone, you must first investigate his background and the power backing him? Now look, you’ve provoked such a formidable bastard—let’s see how you clean up this mess!"
Xia Fugui snorted coldly and immediately burst out in anger. If this had been any other time, it might have been manageable. Offending someone like this would only mean trying hard to smooth things over. But what time was it now? He had thrown all of his wealth into the redevelopment plan for the old district; there could be no slip-ups whatsoever. If anything went wrong, the foundation he had built over more than ten years would be ruined in an instant...
"Let the past be the past. Godson, from now on, absolutely do not provoke this person again. He is definitely not someone we can afford to offend. Do you understand?"
De Guangqing saw Xia Jianren remain silent and, enduring the searing pain in his waist, said with excited trembling, "He only needs to move a finger and you’ll be finished... Godson, there are plenty of women in this world. Why must you hang yourself from one tree? Let it go, do you hear me?"
"Do you hear me or not, you unfilial brat!!"
Xia Fugui raised his hand again as if to strike, frightening Xia Jianren into hurriedly nodding. "I know, I know, godfather. I... I won’t provoke that guy anymore..."
"Good. That’s more like it." De Guangqing let out a long breath, then a fierce look suddenly flashed in his eyes. "Though for now I’ll let it go, sooner or later I, De Guangqing, will get this back! My senior brother, who came out of the mountains after finishing his training, will be coming to see me before long. By then, I’ll make sure he vents this anger for me!"
The room was instantly filled with resentment and killing intent. Xia Fugui nodded, though no one knew what he was thinking, and simply looked silently at his son. Xia Jianren, hearing De Guangqing’s words, seemed to regain a trace of color in his dispirited appearance, and in his gloomy eyes appeared the same glint as De Guangqing’s.
"Achoo!"
While I was in class, I suddenly sneezed, not knowing why.
At the front of the classroom stood Professor Ren, teaching mathematics, while Su Xin beside me was dutifully taking notes. Yet beneath her beautiful hair, her lovely face was still faintly furrowed.
Seeing her like that, I could not help feeling a stab of pain in my heart.
Three days ago, after I left Chu Zhengsheng’s house, I never went to question Su Xin about what Chu Zhengsheng had told me. Because I understood that being forced like this by her own family must already have made her miserable. I truly could not bear to press her further, nor could I bear to see that heartbroken look on her face.
"Su Xin, can you come out with me for dinner tonight?"
I had already decided not to tell Su Xin about this matter. I only wanted to be with her as happily and as blissfully as before, and let her become the happiest woman in the world.
As for the Su family treating her as a political bargaining chip and a sacrifice to interests, I already had a rough plan in my heart—but clearly, not now.
At present, Sunlight Group had already acquired Chu Zhengsheng’s Imperial Dynasty Group, Zhang Jing’s Celestial Sounds Group, and nearly ten other companies and enterprises it had recently bought. It had plainly become a comprehensive, large-scale commercial conglomerate. With the technological know-how I had given Zhang Jing, I believed that within a year those ten acquired companies and enterprises would truly soar, transforming from small businesses into major group corporations. I believed that before long, my business empire would break out of C City and spread across the province, and even into the surrounding provinces and cities.
But the most important and most urgent thing to do right now was power.
Yes—power. Only power could keep Su Xin by my side. Only power could make Su Guohui release her.
"Tonight? Hmm, I’m not really busy, but since evening self-study starts so early, where should we go to eat?"
When Su Xin heard me ask, she barely managed to put on a bright smile as though nothing were wrong. Her little hand lightly pinched my waist and said, "You’re not allowed to spend money so extravagantly, understand? That French meal the other day must have cost a lot, right? In the future, stop going to such expensive places to eat."
Feeling the mark her hand left at my waist, I could not help smiling. "It’s fine. Your husband has plenty of money. If I don’t have money, how am I supposed to support my breathtaking wife? Heh heh, I heard there’s a pretty good Italian restaurant. Let’s go there tonight, all right?"
"No way. It’ll take too long, and we definitely won’t make it back in time for self-study." Su Xin rolled her eyes at me and pouted in dissatisfaction. "I’ve already skipped evening study once for you. You don’t need to study, but I do. If I don’t work hard and get left too far behind by you, what then?"
"Heh, what are you afraid of? I’ll help you." Taking advantage of her not noticing, I secretly pinched her soft little bottom beneath the short skirt, and she immediately blushed scarlet. She squeezed my arm hard and said in a shy, coquettish voice, "You little rascal."
"Come on, Xin Xin, let’s go today, okay? In a few days I’m going to the capital to take part in the computer competition. If we don’t spend time together now, there won’t be any chance later."
When I mentioned the capital, Su Xin’s pretty face seemed to dim all at once, but very quickly she returned to normal.
I could not help thinking to myself: Su Xin, don’t worry. I will definitely save you. I said you would be my woman for life. No one will ever take you away from my side.
"All right, all right. Since you’re going to the capital, I’ll make an exception this time. Ah, it’s all your fault—I’m going to have to lie to the teacher again."
Su Xin reluctantly agreed to my suggestion, and delighted, I quickly leaned over and planted a kiss on her tender cheek while the teacher up front was not looking. That only made her face even redder with shyness.
At once I hurriedly took out my phone and sent a text to Li Dabiao, telling him to drive over in my Audi A8, which I had just picked up from the dealership this morning, and to serve as my driver as well.
Thinking of the romantic Italian dinner that awaited us tonight, and of Su Xin’s beautiful and enchanting face beside me, my heart was filled with happiness.
Every day with Su Xin was so joyous, because in my heart she was my goddess forever...
