Chapter 22: Only Remembering Other Men?
After the two officials left, Qin Yi looked at Jiang Boyuan and took an address and a phone number out of his pocket.
"Boyuan, go and contact this person. If possible, bring him here, and I want you to go yourself."
Jiang Boyuan looked at the contact information, agreed, and turned to carry out the task.
Qin Yi pushed his wheelchair to the side of Su Wan's bed. He watched her silently, wanting to take her hand, but noticed that her right hand was also badly swollen and wrapped in thick gauze.
He couldn't help but feel a pang of heartache. She must have been terrified at the time; a man like Lin Qisheng had no sense of morality whatsoever. He had even braced himself for the worst—that even if Su Wan had been violated by Lin Qisheng, he would still stand by her side, and they would simply live out the rest of their lives in peace.
Su Wan did not wake up until noon the next day. She tried to move, only to find that she was in pain everywhere, and the scent of disinfectant hung in the air. As she opened her eyes, she met Qin Yi's gaze. He looked at her with infinite tenderness.
"You're awake?"
Su Wan looked at Qin Yi, her brow furrowed as if she were trying to recall something that remained just out of reach. Qin Yi watched her nervously; he was tense, remembering the doctor's warning that the blood clot in her head might affect her memory.
Su Wan remained silent after waking up. Qin Yi spoke again, his voice gentle enough to melt. "Would you like some water?"
Su Wan's memory was still stuck at the moment before she lost consciousness. She remembered seeing Lu Xing, and that Lu Xing had spoken to her, and then she had blacked out. She opened her mouth with difficulty.
"Where is Lu Xing?"
Qin Yi’s hand tightened on the armrest, his veins bulging. Had she forgotten him? Had she forgotten her own husband but remembered Lu Xing? Did she like Lu Xing? Was that why he was the only one she remembered?
Qin Yi heard himself tell her, "Lu Xing went home."
"He went home?"
"Yes."
His voice was hoarse. It wasn't until Su Wan asked him that he realized he had been the one speaking. He turned his wheelchair to pour some water, mostly to hide his sorrow. Su Wan looked at him, feeling muddled. Her mind seemed fuzzy, and some things were hard to grasp; it took her a long time to understand what had happened. It seemed that a head injury really did make one’s reactions sluggish.
"Qin Yi, where am I hurt?"
Qin Yi let out a long sigh of relief. She hadn't forgotten him. His mood lightened instantly. He brought the water over, picked up a spoon, and fed it to her bit by bit, coaxing her patiently. "Drink some water to soothe your throat."
Su Wan's throat was dry and painful, so she obediently opened her mouth and let him feed her. The burning sensation eased once the warm water hit her stomach. When she signaled that she had enough, Qin Yi set the bowl down and explained patiently, "The doctor said they are just superficial wounds; they will heal with rest."
Su Wan wanted to nod, but the moment she moved her head, it felt like it was going to explode. She helplessly closed her eyes to show she understood. Qin Yi watched her endure the pain, his heart aching once more. He looked at her with gentle, lingering affection.
"It’s all my fault for not being careful enough, causing you to suffer this undeserved disaster. I’m sorry."
As he spoke, Qin Yi reached out to touch her hand. His eyes were filled with apology. Su Wan’s hand was also stitched up, and she curled her fingers to tug at his. "It’s not your fault; it’s just that the bad guy was too wicked. By the way, what happened to Lin Qisheng?"
Qin Yi gently stroked her hand. "Don't worry. Changchun and the others have taken him away. He will be dealt with."
Su Wan closed her eyes, signaling her agreement.
"Sleep a little more if you're tired," Qin Yi said.
As Su Wan fell back into a deep sleep, Qin Yi watched her sleeping face in silence.
For the next few days, Su Wan’s head still ached severely. The doctor ordered complete rest, so she couldn't get out of bed. Qin Yi thoughtfully massaged her legs, and Su Wan enjoyed his service with peace of mind. She was his wife now, and she could feel his devotion. Although they had not yet consummated their marriage, she took his care for granted. She decided that once she was discharged, she would continue to take care of him just the same.
With Qin Yi’s care, she wouldn't sit if she could lie down, acting as pampered as a young mistress raised in luxury. Once a person receives sincere love, they become delicate, unable to bear even the slightest grievance. Occasionally, Su Wan would throw little tantrums, just like a young couple bickering. Qin Yi would indulge her, spoil her, and coax her.
Since Qin Yi had mobility issues and Grandmother Qin was elderly, he hired a nursing assistant to help with bathing, but handled everything else himself. He would tell her jokes to make her laugh, though when Su Wan laughed, it pulled at her face and made her head buzz. She would glare at him angrily and make threats, "You just wait! When I'm better, see how I deal with you!"
Qin Yi sat on her left side, and since her left hand was uninjured, she would take out her frustration on his hand resting on the bed. Qin Yi smiled and let her pinch and squeeze. The nursing assistant watched them, smiling as she praised them, "You two are such a loving couple!"
Once Su Wan’s anger subsided, Qin Yi began peeling an apple for her, chatting idly as he did so.
Suddenly, the four members of the Su family pushed the door open. Su Shikun and Su Qing followed behind their parents. When Han Hongmei saw the gauze on Su Wan’s head and hand, her eyes immediately turned red with heartache.
"Wanwan..." she choked out.
Su Chengde’s face also showed great pain. Su Shikun clenched his fists, and Su Qing stepped forward to take Su Wan’s hand, tears streaming down her face like pearls. "Sister, I was so worried about you..."
Su Qing sobbed, unable to speak further. Han Hongmei hurried to comfort her softly. "Qingqing, don't cry. Look, isn't your sister fine? Don't worry!"
Su Shikun also tried to cheer Su Qing up, and before long, she was laughing through her tears. Their attention was entirely focused on Su Qing; no one bothered to check on Su Wan, who was the one actually lying in bed injured.
Qin Yi, who had been about to offer them a seat, stopped mid-sentence. He glanced at Su Wan’s expression; she was squinting at the four of them. Through their time together, he knew his little wife was angry. He lowered his head and continued peeling the apple.
Su Wan curled her lips in a sneer, neither speaking nor looking at them. Were they really worried about her? Why had it taken them several days after her hospitalization to think of visiting? Qin Yi had told her that he had called them the very day after she was injured. In their hearts, their own daughter wasn't even as important as the New Year.
Forced to watch the four of them acting like a harmonious family, Su Wan felt a stinging pain in her heart.
Qin Yi cut the peeled apple into small pieces. The two exchanged a glance, and Qin Yi picked up a small piece. "Chew slowly, be careful of your face."
Only then did the four members of the Su family realize the situation. Su Chengde cleared his throat and stepped in to smooth things over. "Xiao Qin, what exactly happened to Wanwan?"
Qin Yi turned back to invite them to sit on a nearby hospital bed before slowly recounting what had happened. Upon hearing that Su Wan had been kidnapped by a desperate criminal and had nearly been violated, the four of them were visibly shaken. Han Hongmei wept and moved to Su Wan’s side, staring at her stitched-up hand. "My poor Wanwan..."
Qin Yi watched the four of them. The worry on their faces was genuine, yet their indifference toward Su Wan was equally impossible to fake.
