Chapter 113: Playing Matchmaker

“Of course they’re in demand. The young men and women from Fuyun Technology Group all have everything going for them. You can tell at a glance that they’re different. Who wouldn’t want them?”
Old Uncle Li Er, standing nearby, shook his head as well.
“People have been asking me for help left and right. Ergou from our village asked me to find a match for his son, and Aunt Chen from town wants me to introduce a young man to her daughter. Even relatives of mine in the county seat have asked me to help. These days, everyone has their noses in the air. They all say that if they’re going to find a partner, it has to be someone from Fuyun Technology Group.”
At the mention of the matter, Sister-in-Law Wang began chattering away. She was a famous matchmaker in Sanjiang Town, with an exceptionally sharp eye and a tongue of iron. Many people sought her help in finding partners for their children. This year, however, everyone insisted that a Fuyun Technology Group employee would be the ideal match.
“Even Ergou’s son wants to marry a girl from Fuyun Technology Group? He ought to take a good look at himself first. He has neither an education nor a job, and he’s lazy and good for nothing. Even an ordinary girl wouldn’t marry him.”
Li Jialiang immediately shook his head when he heard that.
“Of course I know that. The young men and women at Fuyun Technology Group are all excellent. Anyone I introduced to them would at least need to have something to recommend them. I certainly didn’t dare agree to help Ergou’s family.”
Sister-in-Law Wang nodded as well. Anyone without a discerning eye could never become a matchmaker.
“I think you should stop worrying about this and simply focus on selling our pork. The employees of Fuyun Technology Group are all educated people. I’m sure they believe in choosing love freely. Their incomes are high, too. Why would they take a fancy to some country girl or boy from around here?”
Li Jialiang shook his head. His wife, Sister-in-Law Wang, was different from professional matchmakers. She never charged a fee; she was simply warmhearted and enjoyed chatting about neighborhood affairs wherever she went. At first, she had only tried to bring a few people together, but after succeeding several times, she had developed a genuine passion for matchmaking. Every New Year, she busied herself with it all over again.
“What’s wrong with country boys and girls? There are plenty of outstanding people who come from the countryside. Don’t judge people through a crack in the door. I’ve heard Li Fu say that many of Fuyun Technology Group’s employees also grew up in the countryside. Their families aren’t all that different from ours.”
Naturally, Sister-in-Law Wang refused to back down. Ignoring Li Jialiang, she looked this way and that at the Fuyun Technology Group employees passing around them.
“Auntie Wang, I’d like one pork femur.”
Liu Jun had wandered around the market and arrived at Li Jialiang’s pork stall, intending to buy a bone to make soup.
“I’m sorry, Xiao Liu. We’ve sold all the femurs today. We still have some backbones, though. Would you like those? They make good soup too, and they’re great for clearing internal heat.”
Sister-in-Law Wang brought out the backbones for him to see. Liu Jun often bought meat from her stall and was also one of Fuyun Technology Group’s earliest employees, so the two of them knew each other fairly well.
She studied Liu Jun. He dressed plainly, was somewhat plump, and had an ordinary appearance. But Sister-in-Law Wang knew that he was a good-hearted man. He had also come from the countryside, and his family had struggled financially. Her eyes suddenly lit up.
“Backbone will do. Give me some.”
Liu Jun thought for a moment before nodding. Pork femurs were hard to buy; one had to arrive very early to get them.
“All right. Xiao Liu, how much is your year-end bonus this year?”
As she slowly chopped the backbone into pieces, Sister-in-Law Wang casually sounded him out.
“I should have a little over twenty million.”
At the mention of his year-end bonus, Liu Jun could not help smiling. He grinned broadly as he answered.
“My goodness, more than twenty million! Xiao Liu, you’re truly remarkable.”
Li Jialiang immediately gave Liu Jun a thumbs-up.

“Not really. Our project team developed biosensing technology—the core technology behind the virtual machines—so the entire team received relatively high year-end bonuses. I’m only average. Our team leader received more than a hundred million.”
Liu Jun smiled and shook his head. The company’s year-end bonuses were made public, so there was no need for anyone to hide them.
“More than twenty million, and you call that average? Many people couldn’t earn that much in their entire lives. Tsk, tsk. Educated people really are something. Making money with your brains is so much easier than working with your hands, unlike us.”
Li Jialiang sighed and shook his head. Although he had already heard about the enormous year-end bonuses many employees received, he still could not help marveling when he learned that Liu Jun had received more than twenty million.
“Uncle Li, you’re already impressive. My father can’t even butcher a pig. All he knows is farming.”
Liu Jun also smiled and shook his head. He had never imagined that he would one day receive a year-end bonus of twenty million. It all felt like an unreal dream, yet it had truly happened. Ever since he had begun following Li Fu, everything had become possible.
“Xiao Liu, do you have a girlfriend?”
Sister-in-Law Wang naturally had not forgotten the most important matter. Smiling, she asked the question. She had already noticed that Liu Jun was honest and introverted, and since he too came from the countryside, perhaps there was a chance to bring him and her niece together.
“Not yet.”
At that, Liu Jun helplessly shook his head. During his university years, he had been somewhat lacking in confidence. After joining Li Fu, he had had no time for romance, spending every day on research and study. Where would he have found a girlfriend? Now that he was back in his hometown, even his parents urged him daily to find someone.
“Would you like me to introduce you to someone? You could simply get to know each other first and make a new friend.”
Sister-in-Law Wang asked enthusiastically, secretly thinking that there was a good chance.
“Well… all right.”
Touched by her enthusiasm, Liu Jun’s face reddened. He had never expected anyone to take such an interest in finding him a partner. Not wanting to disappoint her, he agreed without much thought.
“Then it’s settled. Give me your phone number so we can keep in touch.”
The moment Sister-in-Law Wang saw his expression, she knew he was inexperienced in such matters. If she seized the opportunity, it was not impossible that her niece could win him over. Her older brother’s daughter still had a chance. Although she was not highly educated, she was quite pretty. To date an employee of Fuyun Technology Group—especially one involved in scientific research—would be a stroke of incredible luck.
Liu Jun smiled helplessly and left his number. Though his income was now extremely high, he remained remarkably innocent. He had only just graduated and worked in a research department, so he had not picked up any of the bad habits of wider society. He was still very simple and unworldly.
“You really are something… Who are you planning to introduce this young man to?”
After Liu Jun left, Li Jialiang could only stare at his wife speechlessly. Her matchmaking habit clearly was never going to change.
“Of course I’m keeping the good fortune in the family. I’m introducing him to my brother’s daughter. The young man may not be handsome, but he’s honest. If Yuyu and he truly hit it off, she’ll have a comfortable life in the future.”
Sister-in-Law Wang rolled her eyes at Li Jialiang, looking entirely justified.
“You certainly have a beautiful dream.”
Li Jialiang shook his head and decided not to think about it any further, leaving Sister-in-Law Wang to make whatever arrangements she pleased.
“A man pursuing a woman faces mountains; a woman pursuing a man faces only a thin veil. You never know how fate will turn out.”
Old Uncle Li Er had clearly seen plenty of such situations himself. He nodded slightly in support of Sister-in-Law Wang.

“That young man earns tens of millions a year. What kind of beauty could he possibly lack? I think the odds are poor.”
Li Jialiang still shook his head, unconvinced.
“Just wait and see. I’ve grown accustomed to seeing the young men from Fuyun Technology Group—educated, refined, and polite. Then I look at the young people in our village, and the difference is enormous. I’m determined to find Yuyu a satisfactory match from Fuyun Technology Group.”
Sister-in-Law Wang spoke with great confidence. Based on her many years of experience, she believed she had a fairly good chance.
That evening, at Li Jialiang’s home in Lijia Village, Sister-in-Law Wang’s older brother and sister-in-law brought their daughter, Yuyu, over as guests to discuss the matter. Although freely chosen marriage and love had long since become the norm, in rural areas many people still followed the old tradition of parents arranging marriages through matchmakers.
“Little Sister, you’ve really struck it rich this year. You’re selling several pigs every day.”
Sister-in-Law Wang’s older brother, Wang Daniu, carefully looked around his sister’s home as he spoke with some emotion.
“Brother, why talk about that? I asked you all here because there’s something more important. If this works out, Yuyu will enjoy a wonderful life from now on.”
Sister-in-Law Wang smiled and steered the conversation elsewhere.
“Is that really true?”
Wang Daniu immediately asked for details. After all, this concerned his daughter’s future marriage.
“Of course it’s true. I’ve already looked into Liu Jun. He really does work in Fuyun Technology’s research department, and his income is extremely high. His year-end bonus alone is more than twenty million. I even went to Li Fu’s house and asked him about the boy in detail. He’s an excellent young man.”
Sister-in-Law Wang thumped her chest in assurance. She took her responsibilities seriously—especially when the girl in question was her own niece. She had even gone to Li Fu’s home to investigate the matter thoroughly.
“Auntie, with an income that high, there’s no way he’d be interested in me.”
Wang Yuyu pouted from the side. She had a pair of bright, limpid eyes, an oval face, and a slender figure, making her a strikingly beautiful young woman. Though she said that, her heart had begun to stir slightly. These days, everyone talked about Fuyun Technology Group’s employees more than anything else.
“Yuyu, listen to your aunt. Liu Jun may not be much to look at, but he’s honest and dependable. And in my opinion, he’s probably never even been in love before. You need to seize the opportunity. Don’t be afraid to blush—be a little more proactive.”
Sister-in-Law Wang spoke earnestly to Wang Yuyu. Her niece was a lovely girl, and every New Year, the matchmakers who came to her brother’s house nearly trampled down the doorstep.
“Auntie, it’s not as if I can’t find a husband. Is all this really necessary?”
“That depends on whom you marry. Can the people who come to your house seeking a match compare with an employee of Fuyun Technology Group? Let me tell you, just because plenty of men are pursuing you now doesn’t mean you should let your pride soar to the heavens. Marriage is no child’s game. You need to keep your eyes open and see clearly.”
Sister-in-Law Wang spoke with exasperation, afraid that her niece might be deceived simply because too many men pursued her. Many men were attentive and affectionate while courting a woman, only to reveal all kinds of rotten qualities after marriage. That was why Sister-in-Law Wang generally chose honest, dependable young men with good character when arranging matches—people suited for building an ordinary life together.
“Yuyu, your aunt is right. She’s arranged countless matches and has an excellent eye for people. Listen to her.”
Wang Yuyu’s mother nodded along in support.
