"To conceive twins at fifty—what a miracle!"
"That man looks like a real success. Even helps his wife with the most personal things. If it were me, I'd be happy to have his children too!"
The two young nurses covered their mouths and giggled as they walked past Lou Nanzhi.
Hearing about someone else's happiness, and knowing they were her age, Nanzhi adjusted her helmet, lowering her head in embarrassment.
She, too, was fifty years old this year.
At twenty, because of her family's poor background, she had married Wei Guoxiong, the most honest and also the poorest man in the village, without asking for any dowry. She simply wanted to live a good life, knowing there were few at that time willing to accept someone from her background.
In the past, Wei Guoxiong's job would have been considered quite good—a secure, lifelong position. Lou Nanzhi, coming from an educated family, had helped him step by step to greater achievements. When the policy allowing private businesses was introduced, with her support and encouragement, he even took out a loan to open a chemical plant.
Looking back, she couldn't fathom how she endured those years—washing clothes for others, scrubbing dishes in restaurants, selling snacks on the street—she had done every dirty job at the bottom rung of society.
But she made it through. Now, Wei Guoxiong was not only successful in business but a household name among entrepreneurs in the capital.
His birthday was coming up in a few days. As a housewife, Nanzhi had no income besides the monthly allowance, so she secretly started delivering food, hoping to save up for a surprise gift for her husband.
She finally found the VIP hospital room that had placed the order.
Just as she was about to knock, she heard a familiar voice from inside.
"My darling, your only job now is to rest and take care of yourself. Don't move a muscle. The doctor said it's a miracle for someone your age to conceive, and twins at that! It's rarer than winning the lottery. Our Wei family is counting on you to carry on the family line."
There was a smacking sound, as if he had just given her a kiss.
"Guoxiong! The babies are hungry. Where's the chicken soup you ordered?"
The woman's voice was coy and sweet.
Wei Guoxiong?
If only the voice matched, it could be coincidence—but the name, too? The odds seemed impossible.
Lou Nanzhi’s grip tightened around the delivery bag.
A suspicion rose in her mind, but she didn't dare admit it.
Her husband was always so busy, spending half of each month on business trips. Normally, he shouldn't have been in the capital at this time.

Though they spent little time together, their relationship was always supportive and close, like family. Nanzhi believed herself happy.
Even when her mother-in-law constantly complained she hadn't produced a son, only three daughters, and thus had ended the Wei family line, Nanzhi had borne it in silence. After all, the older generation cared deeply about continuing the bloodline. She never got angry; even when her mother-in-law was ill, she attended her every need without complaint.
While Nanzhi lingered at the doorway, lost in thought, a sharp ringtone cut through her reverie.
Fumbling frantically in her delivery vest as though caught doing something wrong, she searched for her phone.
Before she could find it, the VIP room door swung open from inside.
In the instant their eyes met, tears blurred her vision, and a searing pain crushed her chest.
She could scarcely believe it—yet she had no choice.
Standing before her was indeed the man who had shared her hardships for thirty years.
A whirlwind of anger swept through her.
"Wei Guoxiong! Do you even have a conscience?"
Nanzhi staggered, speaking each word through clenched teeth, as if summoning all her strength.
Wei Guoxiong, however, showed no concern for his wife. He glanced anxiously around.
"Lou Nanzhi! You must be mad, following me like this?"
In the capital, he was a minor celebrity. If the media caught a scene like this, it could ruin his reputation and his business.
Without hesitation, he grabbed Nanzhi and yanked her inside, slamming the door behind them.
Suddenly, the air in the room was suffocating.
Nanzhi clenched her fists, trembling with rage.
The woman reclining on the hospital bed wore designer pajamas emblazoned with Chanel’s logo, a luxury Nanzhi had never enjoyed, even as Mrs. Wei.
For more than a decade, she thought their lack of intimacy was due to his exhaustion or age, never realizing that her husband simply had no interest in her.
As a wife, mother, and daughter-in-law, Nanzhi had been dutiful, her only failing the absence of a son. She had done nothing to wrong the Wei family.
She believed she would spend her days in peace, with a successful husband and three loving daughters—never dreaming she would end up the butt of a cruel joke.
"Guoxiong, everything’s fine here now. Why don’t you take your wife home?"
The mistress, her makeup flawless, looked clearly flustered.
Wei Guoxiong stubbed out his half-smoked cigarette with a frown.
"I’ll call the driver now. You’d better go home—don’t embarrass me here."
He reached for his phone.
Nanzhi stepped forward and snatched it from his hand, staring at him with fierce intensity, struggling to control her emotions.
"Wei Guoxiong! Don’t you have anything to say to me?"
That quiet husband of hers wasn’t tongue-tied—he simply hadn’t met the right person. In all her years, after three children, she had never heard a word of tenderness from him.
"What’s there to explain?"
Just as the tension reached its breaking point, her mother-in-law, Song Ying, entered the room.
Nanzhi turned in disbelief. It seemed she was the only one in the family kept in the dark.
She had worked herself to the bone for them, serving everyone, even delivering food in secret to surprise a faithless husband.
"If it weren’t for your father, you think the Wei family would’ve married someone with your background? And what do we get—thirty years, and not a single son. Guoxiong is over fifty, finally has hope of a child, and as his wife, you should be happy for him! Xiao Qing never asked for a formal title, yet you’re making a scene! Or do you just want to see our family line end for good?"
Song Ying’s voice was sharp and forceful.
Nanzhi’s head buzzed with confusion.
Suddenly, she felt she was the criminal, expected to accept her husband’s betrayal, to welcome the mistress.
Shouldn’t it be them apologizing to her?
But seeing her husband silently endorse his mother’s words, Nanzhi could barely breathe.
She forced herself to calm down. Even if they were to divorce, she had the right to know the truth.
"How long have you two been together?"
