Volume One, Chapter Eight: I Know This Is Because You Love Me

Wei Guoxiong was equally agitated.
With his brows tightly furrowed, he loosened his tie with one hand and strode over to Lou Nanzhi.
“Lou Nanzhi, I think you’re the one who’s completely out of your mind!”
Wei Guoxiong had no desire to know how Lou Nanzhi had entered the negotiation venue. None of that mattered to him.
What mattered was that he knew she had come here for his sake.
“Lou Nanzhi! You’re wasting your talent by not becoming a detective. You followed me at the hospital, and when I came out to attend a dinner, you somehow managed to track me here too. I don’t blame you for trying to take me back from Xiaoqing, but don’t you think you ought to consider the occasion?”
As he spoke, Wei Guoxiong glanced at Lou Nanzhi, who had fallen onto the grass. When he got a proper look at her in her evening gown, the fury burning inside him seemed to ease somewhat. It was the first time he had ever seen her dressed like this. To be honest, she looked quite beautiful.
“Lou Nanzhi, this is the Fu Group’s negotiation gala. Put bluntly, a businessman like me barely qualifies to be here. And yet you went up there and played the piano just to attract my attention. Is this how you show your love for me? I’ve been with you for thirty years, Wei Guoxiong, and it turns out I’ve really underestimated you.”
As he spoke, Wei Guoxiong instinctively reached out to pull Lou Nanzhi up.
But after listening to his endless tirade, Lou Nanzhi was utterly torn between laughter and exasperation.
She had followed him?
Did he think every other man in the world had died?
Lou Nanzhi slapped his hand away as if she had touched something filthy.
“Wei Guoxiong, I think you should have your head examined too. You say I followed you—have you developed some kind of delusional disorder?”
Lou Nanzhi rose and started back toward the hotel. The evening could have ended perfectly, but after Wei Guoxiong’s antics, she had no idea what the situation inside had become.
“Stop being so stubborn! I’ve kept the position of Mrs. Wei open for you. Come home with me now. Once the Fu family comes out, this will be impossible to resolve peacefully.”
Wei Guoxiong’s obsession was frighteningly deep.
He continued tugging at Lou Nanzhi.
In that instant, he seemed to rediscover the shy pushing and shoving of their youth. A trace of excitement even rose in his heart. Clearly, somewhere deep down, he still had feelings for Lou Nanzhi.
“Let go of me, Wei Guoxiong! I’m not going home with you!”
“Lou Nanzhi, we’re both getting on in years. Are you really going to keep this up? If you insist on making a scene, then come home with me. I’ll give you all the trouble you want.”
It was the first time Lou Nanzhi had ever seen this side of Wei Guoxiong. He looked ridiculous, like a clown. Was this how he placated women outside?
In an instant, the last shred of goodwill she had held for him vanished without a trace. Lou Nanzhi even felt nauseated.
“What are you doing? Let go!”

As the two of them struggled back and forth, A Kuan’s deep voice shattered the tranquility of the garden at night.
The moment Wei Guoxiong saw A Kuan’s icy face, he released his grip in fright.
“Oh! Brother Kuan! She’s my wife. I never meant to cause any offense tonight. Please explain things to the Young Master. I’ll take her home right away and make sure she learns her lesson.”
Although Wei Guoxiong had never personally witnessed the methods of the powerful families in the capital, he had heard the stories. A Kuan had already warned him to behave himself. Now that something like this had happened, who would believe him if he claimed Lou Nanzhi had not been the one he brought in?
A Kuan walked over in a few strides.
Wei Guoxiong was so frightened that he did not even dare raise his head. He was already thinking that, if he had to take responsibility, he could always hand Lou Nanzhi over. After all, surely they would not do anything too excessive to an old woman.
“Miss Lou!”
A Kuan bowed to Lou Nanzhi.
Wei Guoxiong was completely dumbfounded. What was going on?
Lou Nanzhi was equally startled by A Kuan’s gesture and found herself at a loss.
Only two hours earlier, this man had been wearing a stern expression as he reprimanded Sister Wu and the floor manager.
“I’m sorry to trouble you, but please come back inside with me.”
A Kuan’s voice came again, even more deferential this time.
Wei Guoxiong was terrified and had no idea what game the Fu family was playing. But at a moment like this, a grown man could not retreat. He had no choice but to grit his teeth and keep up the act.
“Brother Kuan!” Wei Guoxiong kept his eyes lowered. “The Young Master certainly won’t hold it against people like us. Look at us—we’re both getting old. I’ll take this madwoman home and discipline her properly. I guarantee she’ll never appear in front of the Fu family again.”
A Kuan glanced at the men behind him.
Two men in black suits and sunglasses immediately hauled Wei Guoxiong away.
Watching Wei Guoxiong being dragged off while making incoherent cries, Lou Nanzhi knew she would not be able to escape what was coming today.
She had made the mess, and she would take responsibility for it.
“Let’s go. I’ll agree to whatever compensation is required.”
Lou Nanzhi followed A Kuan back into the hotel ballroom once more.
The lights in the ballroom had already been restored, and the guests had long since dispersed. Lou Nanzhi crept toward the place A Kuan had indicated.
When she noticed that A Kuan had not followed her, her anxiety intensified.
She clasped her hands tightly, calculating the approximate amount of compensation in her mind. If she bankrupted Wei Guoxiong, would that not end up implicating the children as well?

As she pondered this, the man standing with his back to her suddenly turned around.
Lou Nanzhi jumped in fright.
Her heart nearly leaped into her throat.
At her age, she really could not withstand shocks like that.
Once she had recovered, Lou Nanzhi finally got a clear look at the man’s face. He appeared to be no more than twenty years old, with handsome features. Although his expression was cold, he gave her a strangely familiar feeling.
“Auntie Lou!”
Fu Mingyuan suddenly greeted her with a smile.
No wonder his father had searched for this auntie for thirty years. She really was beautiful. Though she was over fifty, she had maintained her figure remarkably well, and her presence was no less impressive than a celebrity’s.
The cold expression on his face suddenly blossomed into a smile, and Lou Nanzhi instinctively leaned back a little.
The young man had quite a sunny smile. He seemed polite, too.
“Auntie Lou, please don’t be nervous. Let me introduce myself first. I’m Fu Mingyuan of the Fu Group. There was a small mishap today, but you truly play the piano exceptionally well. You even managed to anger Vivian so badly over standing me up that she left the country immediately.”
Lou Nanzhi had no idea why the young heir was telling her this. Was he trying to offer her a sweetener before discussing the compensation?
“Mr. Fu, please just tell me how much the compensation will be. I’m prepared, and I can bear the cost.”
Lou Nanzhi had never been one to shirk responsibility.
“Compensation?”
Fu Mingyuan looked utterly puzzled.
“Auntie Lou, I’m afraid you’ve misunderstood. Given your performance today, how could the Fu Group possibly ask you for compensation? I was actually planning to give you a raise and a promotion!”
Lou Nanzhi stared at him, her face filled with disbelief.
“What?”
“Starting today, you will officially become the general manager of the Wangyue Tower Hotel lobby. Your monthly salary will be ten thousand, with weekends off and twenty days of annual leave.”
