Chapter 13: Should Not Have
Guan Yueyue sat before her computer and opened her drawing software. A wooden hexagonal pavilion appeared on the screen. She moved the mouse, ready to add color when Yuan Wu suddenly approached and grabbed her right arm. "Miss Third, tell me, can I go after Doctor Shen?"
Guan Yueyue looked at her in surprise. "You want to pursue Dr. Shen? Did I hear that right?"
Yuan Wu’s face lit up with excitement. "Doctor Shen is so gentle—gentle right to my heart."
Guan Yueyue was speechless.
Yuan Wu clung to her arm. "Miss Third, I’ve lived twenty years and never felt this way about a man. I’ve made up my mind—I’m going to win him over."
Guan Yueyue gently pulled her hand away and continued staring at her computer screen. "You probably don’t stand a chance. He already has a girlfriend."
"As long as they’re not married, there’s still hope," Yuan Wu said, touching her cheek shyly. "Miss Third, be honest—do you think I’m prettier, or his girlfriend?"
Guan Yueyue picked up the mouse, still focused on her design. "Why don’t you go see for yourself? Besides, your foot has mostly healed by now."
"True," Yuan Wu’s eyes sparkled as she hurried off to get ready.
---
When Yuan Wu returned in the evening, Guan Yueyue had left some food for her.
Yuan Wu ate while crying. "Miss Third, I’m heartbroken." As she spoke, food sprayed everywhere.
---
Guan Yueyue closed her computer and looked at her. "What’s she like, his girlfriend?"
"She’s just… too beautiful. Tall, probably over five foot seven." Yuan Wu pulled out a tissue and wiped her tears. "If you went after Dr. Shen, maybe you’d have a chance. But me? No chance at all. I’m just too ordinary. It’s true—pretty people only end up with pretty people. Life’s so unfair."
Guan Yueyue put a hand on her shoulder. "Xiao Wu, what are your plans from now on?"
"Me? I’ll stick with you."
"Stick with me?"
"Yes, Miss Third. Wherever you go, I’ll go. Whatever you want me to do, I’ll do."
Guan Yueyue thought for a moment. "How about this? You’re still young. I’ll sponsor you to go to university."
"Do I have to go?"
She nodded.
Yuan Wu thought it over. "Can I go to police academy?"
"If you want, I’ll figure out a way."
"I do want to."
---
The next day, through Guan Kaiming’s connections, Guan Yueyue successfully helped Yuan Wu enroll in the police academy.
Before she left, Yuan Wu held Guan Yueyue’s hand, hesitating several times before finally asking, "Miss Third, can I ask you something?"
"Go ahead."
"Why are you so attached to being called ‘Miss Third’?"
Guan Yueyue fell silent for a moment. "Because I have two older brothers. They were twins, and when I was very young, they died in a car accident—both of them. My mother died too."
She smiled bitterly. "So, to remember them, I let everyone call me Miss Third."
Yuan Wu felt deeply apologetic. "I’m sorry, Miss Third. I shouldn’t have asked."
"It’s okay. It’s been so long. You should go now—if you’re late, you’ll miss your flight."
Yuan Wu grabbed her suitcase. "Then I’m off. Goodbye, Miss Third. I’ll miss you. When I become a policewoman one day, I’ll come find you."
"Alright, let’s go." Guan Yueyue smiled warmly at her.
