“It seems my strength has grown a bit as well?” Bai Yuxi withdrew his fist, gazing at the pink, tender flesh exposed beneath the cracked, charred skin of his knuckles, murmuring thoughtfully.
“Hey! Bai! This is hardly the time for reflections!” Unlike the utterly stunned academic goddess Su Xiaoke, Willy, the black foreigner, though equally astounded, had no clue what had just transpired. Instead, he was the first to regain his senses, pointing behind Bai Yuxi and shouting, “You seem to have lured the boss over here!”
Bai Yuxi’s body stiffened. Slowly, he turned to look toward the bottom of the crater.
The once rampant arcs of high-energy electricity had ceased without warning, and the two battling bosses had returned to a stand-off…
To be precise, the Abyssal Thunder Toad and the Thunder Marsh Electric Lizard now stood at ten o’clock and two o’clock, forming an angular formation, with Bai Yuxi at six o’clock—a perfect “Y” shape!
Clearly, Bai Yuxi’s moment of reckless triumph after surviving disaster, with his all-out punch, had caused an energy fluctuation that drew the attention of the two bosses, making them notice the seventh squad at the edge of the crater.
A bead of cold, pitch-black sweat slid down Bai Yuxi’s brow.
He quietly swallowed, his whole body rigid, and whispered without daring to turn his head, “They’ve locked onto me. If a fight breaks out, I’ll distract them… You all take the chance to activate the particle disruptor!”
At this moment, silence reigned in the crater. The recent furious battle between the two bosses had scattered many of the plasma toads around, leaving enough space to set up the particle disruptor.
Lofei, tense, lowered her voice. “What about you?”
“Don’t worry about me!”
“You get out first, I’ll run when I see my chance…”
Bai Yuxi was nearly in tears; how could he have known that a moment of swagger would attract both bosses’ attention?
Now, suppressed by the overwhelming aura of the bosses, he didn’t dare move a finger, fearing to provoke their attack, and had no choice but to grit his teeth and play the hero.
The members of the seventh squad exchanged glances; this seemed the only viable plan.
Taking advantage of Bai Yuxi’s standoff with the two bosses, everyone moved inch by inch, making room for Su Xiaoke at the rear and shielding her actions as best they could.
“All set!”
Just as cold sweat soaked every one of them, Su Xiaoke’s urgent voice sounded from behind: “Three, two, one…”
Though no one looked back, everyone could sense the energy surge as the particle disruptor opened a breach in the barrier.
But almost simultaneously with the disruptor’s activation, the horns of the Abyssal Thunder Toad flashed with electricity, and a plasma sphere the size of a basin instantly formed, hurtling toward their position!
“Run!!”
Bai Yuxi roared in terror, lunging forward—not to dodge the plasma, but to punch it head-on!
He’d noticed earlier, when the Tiger Squad opened the gate, that the particle disruptor took three to five seconds to breach the barrier. If he didn’t take the hit, everyone would perish together!
As Bai Yuxi’s fist struck, it felt as if he were punching an invisible “spongy cushion.” With every inch his fist advanced, the impact multiplied, and the resistance grew ever stronger.
One times… three times… nine times… ten times… eleven times!
No!
Not enough!
Leaping into the air, Bai Yuxi screamed again, his right arm crackling with lightning. Electrified particles in the surrounding air frenziedly converged, and he pressed onward!
Thirteen times! Fifteen times!
Boom!
A blazing bolt of lightning erupted from Bai Yuxi’s fist, colliding violently with the oncoming plasma sphere and bursting into a shower of electricity!
Amidst the dazzling light, Bai Yuxi, smoking from head to toe, spun and crashed heavily onto the crater’s slope, scattering dirt as he spewed forth a massive spray of blood, his entire right arm charred black!
“Bai!”
As Bai Yuxi shouted “Run!”, Willy, the fastest, leapt forward, scooped up Su Xiaoke, and rolled them both through the newly opened gateway just in time!
Next came Xia Youyou, Lofei, and Maya, while Drumstick and Jason, carrying wooden shields, stayed behind.
Seeing Bai Yuxi fall from the air, both yelled in alarm, instinctively rushing toward his location.
“Cough, cough…” Bai Yuxi spat another mouthful of blood, shouting hoarsely through bloodied lips, “Don’t come!”
He braced his right arm and struggled out of the pit he’d made, staggering up the crater slope toward the gateway.
But perhaps sensing the outside world, the plasma toads—who had dared not move a muscle before—suddenly went berserk, launching themselves frantically toward the gateway!
In an instant, the crater was filled with flying toads of all sizes, all crazily leaping.
Desperate to escape, they even crashed heedlessly into the two bosses still lingering at the bottom, let alone Bai Yuxi standing in their path.
Bai Yuxi was nearly at the gateway, already able to see the anxious faces of Drumstick and Jason waiting outside. Suddenly, a plasma toad dropped from above, landing squarely on the particle disruptor in front of the gateway!
“Damn!” Bai Yuxi, enraged and coughing blood, leapt desperately toward the flickering gateway!
“Croak!”
Flattened against the barrier, Bai Yuxi: “…”
Plop! Smack! Croak!
One after another, the plasma toads piled onto the barrier beside Bai Yuxi like a slapstick show, then slid down together in a slow cascade.
Managing to turn over and sit against the barrier, Bai Yuxi raised his good left arm to wipe away the blood streaming from his battered face.
He fumbled at his waist for several vials of “biological energy nutrient,” bit off the cap, and poured them all into his mouth. Only then did he finally breathe out in relief, turning to glance at the nearby belly-up dumb toad, and in a fury, smashed it with a punch, splattering it into pulp.
